Spring breaks in Pembrokeshire

Oh thank God, it’s Spring! Time to get out and frolic like lambs!

The puffins are arriving on Skomer, the boat trips are starting, the seafood shack on Freshwater West is open and everything in Pembrokeshire is awake and ready to go. If you want a quiet weekend away or a few days midweek to find your epic in our seas come and stay with us on one of our spring breaks.

We have lots of lovely home cooked food, friendly animals to soothe you, the best walks to guide you to, and deep comfy bed to sink into after a day outdoors

We also have fresh air – sea or mountain – in great big beautiful lung fulls.

April – my dogs at barking at the woodpeckers headbanging in the trees, the owls are stuttering in the morning and the wild garlic is going crazy on the bridle path, covering up the mud of winter. April is amazing; the air smells like summer coming, the first boat trips are on to the islands of Ramsay and Skomer and the puffins are whirring in to land and refurbish their burrows. The coastal paths are still quiet and the sneaky sudden suns of April can burn you if you aren’t careful – April tans set you up for summer! Easter is in mid April this year and all the attractions and adventure tours are ready to go. Cafe Mor, the award winning seaside foodie shack at Freshwater West opens on April 1st and boat trip, coasteering and kayaking suppliers are ready to go. It’s going to be a beautiful spring.

May – May is always bluebells. They grow in our woods and hedgerows and under the giant sycamore in the garden. May is also when we usually take advantage of our home and enjoy visiting the islands and taking a jet boat around Ramsay sound. It’s quiet, warmer and still dramatic enough to fulfil my photography fantasies. The Manx Shearwaters, all 120,000 of them, will have arrived on Skomer and the shear (no pun intended) size of the colony and the noise they make will amaze you.

June – Rolling on into summer. On Skomer the first pufflings will be born – was there ever a cuter name for a baby anything? – and the parents are flying furiously to find enough fish. The warm nutrient rich waters around Pembrokeshire will be calling to the basking sharks and the dolphins. The sea is heating up; we get turtles arriving on the gulf stream, following the jellyfish, and weird sunfish can be seen from boats and cliffs. Our house will be fully enclosed in light dappled green as the trees get their summer cloaks and the squirrels in the garden will be lazily taunting the dogs from their dreys.

Spring is a great time of year to visit Pembrokeshire, you see the burst of growing green that softens this land of legends, you get to appreciate our sea, all turquoise and jade in the welcome sun. This time, in the first flush of optimistic growth, is when this land is at its most beguiling and in the early morning mists, so magical.
